Scoring System in Mahjong

Mahjong uses a variety of scoring systems, but the core principle is simple: the more complex the combination, the higher the points awarded. Below is an overview of the basic scoring rules:

Standard Win

A typical win, where the player successfully forms a winning hand, earns 10 points.

Pong of Dragons or Winds

When a player completes a Pong (three identical tiles) of dragons or winds, they receive between 10-20 points, depending on the specific tiles involved.

Pure Combination

A Pure Combination occurs when all tiles in the hand belong to the same suit (such as all bamboo or all characters). This combination is worth 40-80 points.

Secret Hands

Certain special hands, such as those composed entirely of Pongs, are highly valuable and can be worth 50 or more points.

Self-Drawn Hand

If a player wins by drawing the final tile themselves, without relying on discarded tiles, their score is doubled (a 2x multiplier).

When a player wins, the others must either pay points or follow the betting system in place, depending on the game’s rules. While Mahjong variants may feature their own unique scoring methods, the central concept remains the same: the player with the most valuable hand, or the first to declare “Mahjong,” wins the game!
